Someone asked me if I were to give up running / cardio or strength training, what would it be?⁠
⁠
To be honest, I don’t have an answer. The two go hand in hand.⁠
⁠
Cardio is freeing mentally in a way that strength training doesn’t compare. I am able to slip away into my own world on a run. I can focus on thoughts or conversely I can put those thoughts away and focus on the moment. The clarity and stress relief I experience from running is unparalleled and has become a necessity in my health practice.⁠
⁠
Strength training requires focus. Almost every gym exercise could be injurious if performed carelessly. Heavy loads require all of you to be present for the task at hand. There is nothing like the satisfaction of successfully grinding out a hard rep to close out a max effort. While it may require a grand effort to become stronger in the gym, everything else gets easier (it’s easier to lift that box, to carry those groceries, to start that lawnmower etc).⁠
⁠
Running reduces mortality by 27% and strength keeps me running (making me both resilient and more efficient). Running and strength training have a cyclical relationship. Running reduces recovery during a strength training session and strength enhances my ability to run faster and pain free.⁠
⁠
My goal is to live as long and as well as possible and both cardio and strength play a big role in my longevity and physical freedom. It is safe to say that I won’t be giving up either.
